Adults and Computer Literacy

With Technological advances and in school. our Young People are flying through learning Computer Competence. Some older individuals didn’t have that luxury.   I’ve found myself in an unhappy place when attempting to explain Computer Literacy to some people.  The point is that NO really private individual is going to teach  a person how to use the literacy that sits before them in a really constructive way.  The thing is, we can’t teach others how to think.

Using Diana Ross as a perfect example of a Matured woman going to Computer Literacy Classes at Apple is proof that in order to really learn something you should take the initiative to find the correct way which is in the form of group lessons.  We learn better with groups.  I’m sure she could have relied on her family but she didn’t.

About 10 minutes of budding frustration from my son who grew up Computer Savvy (bear in mind, we parents bought them the equipment to be savvy) and I immediately decided that I could teach myself how to upload a Profile image of myself, after all, I had been uploading images for articles with only reading instructions or in some cases, figuring things out on my own.

Many of us transitioned from Careers in Secretarial and Administrative work that allowed us to feel familiar with a Keyboard so Wordperfect for example, was a bag of peanuts until you realized there were fonts, justifications, highlights, super scripting,  sub scripting, spell checks, etc.  But as you grew, without the popularity of the Internet, you simply learned.

If that is an advantage as an example only, it doesn’t mean that you cannot learn the Internet which is what people want to learn.  Over the weekend I tried to help an aged gentleman and told him in advance that he would have to  create a database for his Passwords and Usernames and other things.  That Database could simply be a tablet or a nicely written List on paper.  Of course he didn’t, so I left Passwords and Usernames for him.

Two years ago, my competitive friend who doesn’t know that no one should share email addresses, therefore it wouldn’t be wise to use mine, bought a Lap Top that was damaged by her child before she learned (after acting offended like a child as I tried to teach her at her request) and so far she still hasn’t.  We are no chickens, but I know that she is no dummy but she pouted like a child at her own impotence and not following when I am one of the most understanding folks around when I teach.  I’d get commendations at Work for Leadership, Teaching and developing new procedures.  With the Internet, I did not go running to others for help.  I became Computer Literate first and I am not all of that, I would just prefer to take the hysteria out of learning by first, listening!  I have had really hard Programs to learn in my former Work Force days and some of my teachers were wretched people when it came to explaining things.

My aged friend was left with his Facebook opened by me, never closing out after hours of me leaving for Lunch.  He’s been a brilliant Professional person so I realize he is by no means learning disabled…..  He’s quite bright.  But I found that people want to partake in the least of challenges; they would prefer you think for them.  Well, this person here has too many Passwords and Usernames herself.  Can you at least think of those yourself people?  I’m just sayin’……………
