Volunteers (Photo credit: vastateparksstaff) Are you out of work? Are you a Senior who wishes to re-enter the Work Force? There are several reasons why Volunteering can help you out and add to your Resume. At a point when you are looking for a job, or just adding to an already existing job (Part-time work), you just may feel Volunteering could be counter productive since you have to spend money on Gas or Train fare to get there and depending on the schedule, feed yourself as well.
Working for a rather prestigious Museum at one time, we became aware that some of the individuals that came in and worked with us on a busy Event, were actually Volunteering. The age range was from quite young, to Senior age.
It’s important to see if you can use your existing skills however, if there is no need for them, still Volunteer if you can. It is a good way to get noticed and Network with others. It shows too that you are a giver and would rather make use of your time. If you are good at Computer, Designs, Phone Canvassing, Call Center, Ushering, Sports, Organizing, Reception; there are so many skills that can be used when you are called to Volunteer once you are known to these Establishments.
Places like Museums, Colleges, Opera Houses, many Cultural Venues need Volunteers. One lady began to Volunteer for the Lyric Opera House and was ultimately hired. If you are not hired in the place(s) that you Volunteer, this Volunteer effort certainly shows on your Resume that you have not sat at home not honing your skills if you have been out of work. It’s not Counter Productive because depending on where you Volunteer, it can be loads of fun with free meals too!
